Flavia Brunetti and her new book, The Web of Time, sends readers on a new adventure through the Web of Time and history with two brave and complex characters. Her book is a lovely mix of modern-day Rome as well as the ancient Rome we know and love from age-old sagas. This book is an absolute masterpiece, from beginning to end, an artful storytelling tribute to Rome’s past, present, and future.

Deep underground, not outside of Time, but Time itself, a web spins. It is constantly changing and moving, reaching back to the moment where Time began––keeping history and telling the story of the world. More recently, it has begun tearing and undoing itself, erasing history and affecting past, present, and future. The tearing is the result of human error closing the Great Portals of Kindness, Art, and Language. The gods who put themselves in charge of the Web become increasingly concerned over how the Web is erasing time, so certain deities take the task of fixing it upon themselves.

Meanwhile, in two cities in Italy, far from each other, two teenagers and their fates become intertwined through their involvement with ancient history. One teenager has a gift with words, and the other has a gift for speaking without words. Anna and Jack meet at the Umbilicus Urbi when Jack is pushed out of one of the Great Portals. The cat god Nafusa meets them there and explains that time and destiny have given them a quest: to restore peace to the Web of Time and thereby their world.

Jack and Anna are taken through time to three ancient cities that are crumbling, with the mission of fixing them, and therefore the Web of Time. They face emotional memories from their haunted pasts along the way. On their journeys, the teenagers meet a collection of ancient Roman gods who assist and interfere with their goal. When at last the unweaving of the Web of Time affects the existence of the gods, it’s up to Jack and Anna to save the history humans have woven throughout the ages. When all seems lost, the heroes of Rome find strength and hope in the timeless concepts of unique identity and voice.

I have had the privilege of reviewing many books from several different genres here on Kings River Life, and all of them have been well-written and good reads. However, The Web of Time is one of my favorites. The style of writing is captivating and charming at the same time, being incredibly descriptive and emotional. The way that several time periods, genres, ancient renowned cities, and timeless characters are woven into this book almost becomes a web of time itself. Moreover, this book has a powerful message about language and voice, and how these intricately complicated parts of our cores can change the world.

The Web of Time is a must-read, and absolutely a re-read for me. This book has the potential to impact you wherever you are, whatever language you speak, whoever you are. If you’re looking for an emotionally charged book with complex characters and a truly heart-warming ending, this is a book you will NOT want to miss.
