Death of the Hula Girl by Catherine Bruns is the 25th book in the multi-author Aloha Lagoon Mystery series. This series follows different heroines in the resort town of Aloha Lagoon – a little bit of tropical paradise nestled along the coast of Kauai. These books can be read in any order, and readers can dip in whenever the mood strikes. This latest entry is perfect summer reading.

Carrie Jorgenson is happy to be back in her adopted hometown of Aloha Lagoon, Hawaii, after she finished her work on a Hollywood movie. Carrie is serving up pineapples and poi to her beloved regular customers and vacationing tourists alike at the Loco Moco Café. Carrie is surrounded by good friends, her fur baby Benny, and her true love, Keanu.

Carrie wastes no time getting back to work and helping Keanu with the weekly luau. Everyone is surprised when Keanu’s ex-girlfriend, Tammy, shows up, ready to perform the hula dance with a group of dancers. Shockingly, Tammy collapses at the end of her dance and is later pronounced dead at the hospital. And since Keanu was overheard having a heated argument with Tammy before the dance, his name tops the list of suspects.

This is another great entry into such a clever series. As a reader, it’s so much fun to explore the same place with different authors, and the mysteries are always engaging and layered. I was unable to guess the ending ahead of time in this latest entry and felt my jaw drop open when clues came into place.

Carrie is a thoughtful and kind character and fiercely devoted to those she loves. Her hunt for justice is inspiring, and I especially loved that this time Carrie worked with the island’s detective. Readers also see a bit more into Carrie’s family history, and while it’s difficult, it is handled with grace and care and makes Carrie into an even more complex character.

In addition to a strong, twisty mystery with compelling characters, the setting is perfect armchair travel. I would happily pack my bags and head to Aloha Lagoon (despite the high rate of murder). I could easily visualize the cafe and the surrounding beauty of the resort. If you can’t travel to Hawaii this summer, I strongly suggest picking up this latest and the rest of the backlist titles in this series.
