Twenty-something Danika Delaney thinks providing desserts for two important occasions this Friday night is a nearly-insurmountable problem. After all, she’s only the proprietor of a small coffee-and-ice cream shop, having returned to her small Long Island, New York hometown to take over the business from her ageing uncle.
On the night in question, sweets quickly become the least of Dani’s troubles. First, her nephews ruin her fanciest dress when she arrives to deliver desserts at the initial event: a dinner with her large extended family she doesn’t have time to stay for

Then Dani’s ex-boyfriend arrives, as an EMT. And her current boyfriend, a police detective, takes the case, ordering her to stay out of it. You can imagine how well that instruction goes, especially when the husband and son of the dead hostess swear they saw Dani’s car at their house earlier that day, and security footage shows someone a lot like her getting out of the car.
Camaraderie is a big part of Dani’s life, mainly in the persons of her uncle, her sister, her best friend, and a tech wizard/part-time employee. A tiny critique: readers might feel overwhelmed with the number of friendship declarations about Dani’s crew in this book—though the close friendships are a big part of the reason we’re fond of the series. And the team is ever loyal, as creative as they are supportive.
Author Lena Gregory has done another great job of keeping readers guessing about which characters are good, and which are evil, shifting the possibilities as the story progresses at a lively, entertaining pace.

One day it occurred to her that she could combine the two pursuits. She recently began to write wine-themed cozy mysteries. Hopefully, her agent will love them.
