Readers looking to add a little spooky into their summer reading need look no further than Nupur Tustin’s novella The Ghost in the Closet: A Medieval Mystery. In just 72 pages, Nupur tells the story of a ghost haunting a medieval French convent.
A local artist has passed away from old age in Sister Margaret’s convent, and his room is being cleaned for an important visitor soon to arrive. Unfortunately, the ghost of the artist is haunting the room and demands that an old painting he created in his youth be found and destroyed.
Sister Margaret bravely takes on this task, but it is not an easy one––the lawyer who owns it refuses to part with it. And then the work is stolen, and of course Sister Margaret and her convent come under suspicion.
The chilling descriptions of a ghost moaning in a convent pulled me right in, and I could practically feel the temperature in the room plummet. Sister Margaret’s faith and bravery in the face of the spooky unknown made her a character I admired greatly. I could feel her worry and quickly read this in one sitting so I could know the resolution.
This mysterious tale is based on a true story––a medieval mystery set in Southern France. (Do be sure to read the author’s note at the end––it is fascinating.)
A tightly plotted and wonderfully written ghost story to add to your TBR list!
