If you enjoy cozy mysteries with humor that borders on zany, this series is for you. Marsupials are Murder is the 36th book and it is just as humorous and attention grabbing as the others. Each of the Merry Wrath mysteries are stand-alone books that build upon each other as we learn more about the characters, but it is not necessary to read them in order. Merry shares plenty of backstory and tidbits about each person, so you are never confused about who is who. You may have people staring at you funny as you guffaw while turning the pages, but you will not be lost.

Merry’s Machiavellian troop live in Who’s There, Iowa, and are visiting their sister city, Doover in New South Wales, Australia. They want to share their WWHLD philosophy with the mayor of Doover and meet up with the local Girl Guides troop. WWHLD stands for “what would Huey Long do,” Huey Long having been the governor of Louisiana in the 1920s. Middle-schooler scout Ava, the mayor of Who’s There, is ready and willing to share tips with Doover’s mayor, nineteen-year-old former Girl Guide, Sheila, who has issues with the councilmen. While reading the book, keep in mind that everything animal in Australia is out to kill you, except maybe the koalas who are busy forming shadow governments. (Just ask Lauren the junior zookeeper scout.)
It is no surprise that a brown funnel web spider is the murder weapon, or that one of the councilmen is the victim. The local and visiting scouts join forces to help Mayor Sheila, who has been set up as a patsy. Almost no one in town liked the victim, not even his own parents, so there is no shortage of suspects or red herrings. Was the victim killed because of the tourism initiative, land development, or because he was leaning on a member of local law enforcement?
There are a few things that are certain: Merry and her group will get busy Down Under, and they will most likely buy all the Tim Tam cookies from the local grocery stores. In fact, after reading about how delicious they are, I am on the hunt for Tim Tam cookies myself.
