Mrs. Plansky (Loretta) is not what you’d think of when you hear her age. Sometimes, she surprises herself. Despite an artificial hip that is sometimes less cooperative than it should be, she’s taken up tennis and proves to be a good player, champion level, at least at the New Sunshine Golf and Tennis Club. Her partner is Ken, a good player himself. Despite the odds and to the shock of the rival team, Loretta and Kev win trophies and low-level fame.
Since Kev rode his bike to the courts and it’s now started to rain, she gives him a ride home. From his driveway, she’s able to see a yacht moored in the ocean behind his house. Before she can comment, there’s a loud boom and the yacht explodes into flames. There’s no saving it. What’s as unusual as the exploding boat is that Kev didn’t say a word, just turned and gave Mrs. Plansky a sizzling kiss. Just one – the fire department’s arrival interrupts whatever might have happened next. Was it her or a reaction to the explosion, now called a lightning strike, although she didn’t see a flash?![]() |

There’s another problem. Her son Jack seems to have gotten involved with Kev so if the explosion wasn’t a lightning strike, and Kev has disappeared without a word, and a stranger answers the door once but the next time the house has been ransacked, where is Kev and is her son with him? What have they gotten themselves into? Can she find them before matters go from bad to deadly?
This is the second Mrs. Plansky book. Loretta has more skills than she realizes. She’s level-headed and although her mind wanders a bit, it usually circles around so she can catch a thought on the second go. I want to be just like her (minus the uncooperative artificial hip).
Spencer Quinn is the pen name of Peter Abrahams, the author of 48 books including stand-alones like one of my favorites, The Right Side. He writes my most favorite series of all, the Chet and Bernie books, Chet being the dog, Bernie being the detective. The tales are told from Chet’s unique point of view and scattered thoughts and are a total delight.
