Sometimes, healing doesn't come on its own. In The Bridge Between Us, a Labrador retriever leads Barry, a heartbroken widower, to the Smiling Dog Café where he and Leah, his estranged sister, begin a journey to healing. On her eighteenth birthday, after being abandoned by their mother, Leah left Barry behind, and became involved in a life of dirty dealing and addictions. Barry eventually found Ellen, his love, and founded his own life on precision and careful considerations of risk in the café, they sip at coffee that magically brings back good and bad memories. Separately, they recount the childhoods that sent them fleeing from family––in separate directions.
Built on the lessons Betty, the café owner, teaches through her coffee, Barry and Leah make connections to themselves, their family history, and the resounding themes of resilience, family, and inheritance. They realize that their pasts don't have to hold them back, and that instead of running away, they need only run toward a new future––and each other.
The joy I felt when I found out there was a second volume in the Smiling Dog Café series was without limits! I loved being able to immerse myself into the lives and worlds of characters whom I came to deeply care for. Neil Plakcy’s style is soothing and flows smoothly, with careful word choices and heartrending descriptions of pain and joy. He writes tenderly and sensitively about the harsh realities of loss and addiction. This book is not only a pleasure to read, but is a book with the very definition of a happy ending.
Even if you're new to healing fiction, you won't want to miss this book, the Smiling Dog Café series, or author Neil Plakcy. This is THE book to introduce you to this gentle genre. Check it out; you won't want to miss Barry and Leah's story, and what you might learn from it. There is always something to take away from these books.
