Dog of Deliverance is the twenty-first installment in the beloved series by Neil S. Plakcy involving Steve Levitan and his adorable companion, Rochester! Some people read for the mystery, some because Steve says hilarious things, but I am there for the dog! With his inquisitive nose and wagging tail, Rochester is on the case again!
The story begins when President Babson involves Steve in a case surrounding a potential candidate for a teaching tenure position at Easter College, where Steve is an administrator. He asks Steve to use his gray-hat hacking skills to dig into this professor who has a possibly sketchy past involving his female colleagues. Any negative influence or media on Eastern College could sink the small gem, so Steve agrees to help.
Meanwhile, he is also asked by a rabbi friend of his to assist the rabbi’s young cousin Hadassah with a computer project of hers. It’s more than a small project though––Hadassah wants to create a website to expose how her sheltered community oppresses women and the corruption that happens behind the scenes. She doesn’t want to harm the community, whose infrastructure is majorly failing, but she wants to free the women of her community from the repressive attitudes within it.
With so many moving parts, secrets are thrown into the light quickly, starting with the dead body of Hadassah’s fiancĂ©. Rochester and Steve are on the case, helping Steve’s friend Detective Rick Stemper investigate––little do they know that this investigation will lead to clues all over Pennsylvania and farther.
Not only does this story explore Steve and his wife Lili’s Ashkenazi Jewish heritage, it also is a celebration of the holiday of Purim, which is celebrated by Jews. It’s also a very detailed and intriguing look into communities like Hadassah’s, the Jewish religion, and how the way women are treated is ever developing.
Neil brings his witty, flowy, lyrical-like writing to tell this mystery story––I always enjoy his writing, and his insightful way of writing dialogue so naturally. I enjoyed learning more about dogs, Jewish culture, Purim, and the world Steve lives in. I find that whenever I read one of Plakcy’s books, I learn something new.
If you enjoy a twisting cozy mystery with an animal companion, I highly recommend this book to you!––Neil S. Placky is the Lillian Jackson Braun of the dog world!
