Readers looking for a delightful seasonal read need look no further than book three in Victoria Tait’s Cotswold Antique Mystery series: A Pantomime of Peril.

It’s December in the village, and Dr. Peter has organized a pantomime to be performed by village volunteers for the entire community. Dr. Peter hopes that members of the elderly population in the village might especially enjoy getting out of the house for some entertainment during the cold weather.

And then actor and director Wickham Vane shows up, having recently moved to the area and bullies his way into taking over the production. Wickham’s behavior and treatment alienates almost everyone in the cast – even causing some volunteers to walk out!

Unfortunately, on opening night a performer dies mid-performance on stage. Was it natural causes or is something more sinister at play?

Alternating between Keya and Dotty’s viewpoint, the two friends take a deep dive into the case and untangle the clues in the hopes of unmasking the true culprit.

Reading a book by Victoria is like visiting with old friends in my favorite village. Her writing is so vivid, capturing both the weather and seasonal busyness. The details included from the costumes to the food to the tea bring the story and setting to life. I was once again totally immersed in the story, frequently forgetting I was actually sitting in my midwest living room, reading.

The plot of this mystery is well developed and fast moving. There are my favorite, familiar characters, as well as characters I loved to hate! While readers can certainly pick up this latest entry as a standalone, having read all of them, I am delighted to watch the character growth and development. And while Victoria wraps up the current mystery, she always leaves little bits of the overarching plot open so I’m left looking forward to the next entry in the series!
