Who would have thought the real estate market could be hot, cold, and deadly? Welcome to book 7 of the Cindy York Mystery Series, where the phrase “killer commission” has more than one meaning. Cindy is a seasoned real estate agent, wife of 25 years, and mother of four. She and her husband, Greg, never went on a honeymoon, so they are taking a cruise to the Caribbean and a well-deserved break, but Cindy just can’t get over the feeling that something is about to go horribly wrong. And it does, when Cindy finds the body of Olivia, a fellow agent, in front of a house Cindy was supposed to show. Olivia agreed to cover for Cindy, and now Cindy is feeling guilty. So, what does any good amateur sleuth do? They do their best to figure out who did the deed.
This cozy has a thriller aspect that keeps you turning pages while on the edge of your seat. Is it a random killing, a serial killing, or the work of a bitter and soon to be ex-husband? Thankfully, Jacques Forte, Cindy’s boss and best friend, lightens the mood and provides caramel macchiatos. Unfortunately, he has some family drama going on, so as Cindy’s self-proclaimed Watson, he is a bit more sedate than usual.
This subplot allows us to see what a selfless friendship is all about. In fact, because of the threat on Cindy’s life, Jacques is in favor of her staying on lockdown at home until it is time to board the ship and sail off into the sunset. “Let the police handle it,” plead both Greg and Jacques. She promises to stay out of trouble, more for the sake of her kids. To play it safe, she starts by digging on social media and making phone calls. As she starts to gather the facts, she stumbles onto information even the police haven’t learned. (I appreciate that Cindy has a good relationship with law enforcement instead of adversarial.) Plenty of clues and some well-placed misdirection kept me updating my suspect list.
I never considered the possible safety problems for real estate agents, but this story does a good job of pointing them out. There is safety in numbers, and no agent should meet complete strangers for a showing without safety protocols in place. It also points out before engaging their services, home inspectors should be well vetted prior. It never ceases to amaze me how edifying a cozy mystery can be. In addition to being entertained, I almost always learn something new.
I look forward to the next installment in the series. And I hope for Cindy’s sake, it won't be quite so explosive.
