Pat Tierney is a financial advisor to a popular columnist found dead in her penthouse apartment. As this is the fifth in the mystery series, Pat has become well known as an amateur sleuth who works well with the local police. Pat is trying to rev up her financial advisor business and Monika was a new client. Even though Pat didn’t know Monika well, she feels compelled and justified in becoming enmeshed in the murder investigation. Pat works in tandem with Monika’s colleague, Matt, who was and still is desperately in love with her. Matt works on the crime desk of the same publication as Monika

There are many characters/suspects, much like in an Agatha Christie book. Pat and Matt work together to obtain alibis and weed through the long list of possible persons-of-interest. Every time they get close to solving the mystery, another fact turns up to eliminate a suspect.

There are also a couple of subplots. For example: Monika was pregnant when she was killed. Is Matt the father? Monika also had multiple affairs with various men, bought a large chunk of land where she wanted to establish a wildlife sanctuary, and tended to make more enemies than friends with those who appeared in her column. Intrigue and gossip run rampant in the newsroom where Matt and Monika work as well as at a competitive local newspaper. The characters are three-dimensional and layered making it a page-turner. I challenge you to pinpoint the killer before you get to the last chapter.

Rosemary McCracken is native to Canada where she worked on newspapers as a reporter, editor, arts reviewer, and restaurant critic. Along with her Pat Tierney Mystery Series, she has penned numerous short stories published in anthologies and magazines and been nominated for the Derringer Award in 2014. Picking up one of her enjoyable books will stimulate your own amateur sleuth tendencies.
