Review by Sandra Murphy
Nikki works as a dog walker. She has her usual route and dogs who know each other and can walk as a group. On the other hand, walking one more dog in his own neighborhood isn’t that much of an inconvenience. After all, the dog is grieving the loss of his owner.
Despite the number of people in the house, family and staff, the Widow Van Meer insists on hiring Nikki rather than the family caring for the dog.

When Nikki arrives the next morning to walk Roscoe, no one has seen Mrs. Van Meer. Sleeping in isn’t her style so the entire group races to her room – and find her dead. It might look like a natural death but the circumstances are strange enough to warrant a closer look. The landscaper is a little off kilter, the housekeeper has strong opinions she shares, and then the relatives are all too eager to inherit the house or the money.
There’s no one more shocked to find Nikki is in the will as Roscoe’s caregiver for his lifetime. Suspicion is running rampant among the family but there’s plenty left for Nikki.
This is the first book in the series. The characters are well thought out, greedy and self-centered but not over the top. Roscoe, of course, is a favorite. Nikki’s home life isn’t neglected as she gets a new neighbor who may be alienating the landlord before she even meets him. St. Louis (my home town) is as much a character as any of the people. I loved reading about familiar neighborhoods and landmarks.
I’ll be watching for more books from Soderberg. I hope Roscoe is along for the ride.
