Merry Wrath Mysteries are good for what ails you. There is no way to make it past a single page, let alone a chapter, without a chuckle. The town of Who’s There, Iowa is playing host to the Miss Butterpig pageant for middle-school-aged contestants. Only a silly goose would skip an opportunity such as this. Book number 37 incorporates a possibly murderous middle schooler in a pageant that has no money, a possible schizophrenic organizer, the Russian mafia, middle school angst, and hamsters who are sitting on the judges’ panel. Yes, there are hamsters, the Hamlets to be specific, along with Merry, her BFF Kelly, CIA assassin/operative Hilly, and Officer Kevin Dooley. Kevin is just there for the snacks.

You should know that no one liked Farrah. She was arrogant, vindictive, and rather ruthless. So pretty much everyone is a suspect with the exception of Merry’s crowd and the goose. Merry, as a former CIA operative, has experience asking questions and an equal amount of experience getting answers. Merry might be without CIA resources but she did have girl scout Betty, who has some serious skills and often refers to things that would be considered spy craft 101. Betty is known for bugging Merry’s cell phone. She also has the most eerie ability to read Merry’s mind and send text message responses to unspoken questions.
This story had me both entertained and challenged while I attempted to figure out whodunnit. The pageant was over the top, but it was all in good fun. The girls were divided at first but as the story progressed, and Mayor Ava did what she does best, they came together in support of each other. The pageant, like this murder mystery, is just good clean fun.
I am looking forward to the next book, Mastermind for Murder.
