Book three of the Wedding Planner Mystery series is the best one yet. I really enjoy reading the helpful wedding planner tips and tricks that are at the beginning of each chapter, as well as additional tidbits sprinkled through, much like the clues to the mystery.
Kate Ludlow is the owner of Mother of the Bride wedding planning. She is a no-nonsense character who dresses like a modern-day June Cleaver––tan slacks, sweater twin sets, ballet flats, and pearls that adorn her neck and ears. She is also a no-nonsense gal with a great sense of humor. She needs to have one since she began sleuthing with her high school frenemy, Sarah Deloro. The ladies bonded in the previous book, Save the Fate, when they had to join up to clear Kate’s BFF, Jen, who is their mutual friend. The back and forth between Sarah and Kate is very entertaining. The now somewhat more amiable ladies have become a regular Cagney and Lacey duo.

Kate has no real reason to look into the death of the wedding photographer, Clyde Bunker, since he was fairly new to town. Who did he irritate so much that they shot him, with an arrow through the heart while he was sitting in his car. Then again, he did have an on-again off-again relationship with Maria Di’Rissi, the potential mafia heiress. He constantly took calls, even during a wedding shoot, which means that there could be a big number of suspects.
The other problem with Kate’s sleuthing is that her boyfriend, Brian McAllister, is a chief detective. The sort of detective that doesn’t like it when a civilian gets involved, especially his civilian girlfriend. Since this is a standalone mystery, you don’t need to read the previous books to know that Kate won’t back down.
There were several parts that blew me away in this slightly edgy cozy. I was keeping track of suspects, but the red herrings got me. I literally said “no way” after the big reveal. I was also surprised by some other things that Kate discerned in her spare time, but I don’t want to give those away. All in all, this was an enjoyable book, and I look forward to reading the next one.
