Wings of Deceit is the third book in the Seneca James Mystery series, but it is my first encounter with the delightful and cozy story set in the farm area of Maple Junction where you will find the Majestic Monarch butterfly farm and the Painted Wings cafe. I bet you are thinking, what is a butterfly farm? I thought the same thing and took a moment to discover that not only is it a viable and unique business but that there is one located just one town over from me. Both my local farm and the Majestic Monarch offer a butterfly release for weddings, which is where this story starts, and where the murder takes place.

Everyone is surprised that the rich and reclusive Yolanda Steele made an appearance at the wedding, and no one is too sad when she is found dead. Steele was more of an adjective than just a last name for Yolanda who was cold and unyielding. In other words, she was not a nice lady, even as far back as her college days. This means that there are going to be plenty of suspects, from the employees she fired after taking away their pension and healthcare benefits, to the local vet who is having some crazy mood swings and lashing out irrationally after making a pet house call prior to Yolanda’s murder.
Unfortunately, there is a cloud of suspicion hovering over George Marshall, the new pharmacist who was once cousin Evie’s boyfriend. George was found with the murder weapon in his hands, and he swears that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. In order to save both George's reputation and Evie’s heart, Seneca puts down her gardening gloves and picks up her sleuthing cap. Like many small-town cozies, this one has a gossip network that is not always reliable but is always entertaining. I am pretty sure that Sheriff Cody, Seneca’s best friend and secret love interest, gets a few leads thanks to the loose lips.
This book does a great job of engaging the reader’s imagination while offering up clues that flutter through your mind like butterflies on release day. I followed the clues like Seneca but did not figure out the solution until the author was ready to show it. The only thing missing from this entertaining and cute cozy is the recipe for Chef Murray’s exceedingly popular french fries.
