Neil Plakcy brings his eager readers (or is it just me?) a new installment in his Golden Retriever cozy mystery series, with Dog’s Kitchen. This installment is set at our beloved Friar Lake, but with a twist: the Friar Lake monastery has become the set for a television series based on giving dogs human-level cuisine.
Steve Levitan, our relatable narrator, along with the star of the show, Rochester, his lovable Golden Retriever, have been approached by a friend with an unrefusable offer to make Friar Lake the set for an up-and-coming cooking show. With Eastern College questioning whether Friar Lake is an economically worthwhile property, Steve is excited to accept––with President Babson’s blessing and a warning: reality television is more manipulative than it seems, and Steve must not let it get out of hand.
The minute the production crew arrives at the gorgeous lake property, the chaos begins. Because of alarming hints from the producer, a close vet call, and several “accidents” during filming, Steve becomes increasingly concerned about the production. When one of the judges for the cooking show must back out, Steve is asked to step in as a judge, giving him and Rochester an inside look at how reality television is made. It doesn’t take long for Rochester to smell crime afoot!
Neil Plakcy never disappoints! He gives a detailed description of the inner workings of reality television and the creation of the fictional cooking show. Not only are his books intriguing, but they are also educational. Plakcy explains the intricacies of dog’s dietary restrictions and surprised me with information about what dogs can eat.
Once again, Neil Plakcy has nailed it with Dog’s Kitchen. He truly is a master of mystery, with red herrings that mask the true culprit. At the book’s conclusion, he brings readers a satisfying reveal of the culprit as well as a well-rounded ending. Plakcy also obviously has a deep and intricate understanding of a dog’s world, and I appreciate how he prioritizes Rochester and Steve’s relationship in every book. There is something for everyone here, whether you’re a fan of dogs, cooking, or the series. And if you’re not, now is a great time to jump in.
