"Magic and Mischief at the Wayside Hotel" By Elizabeth Everett

Review by Kiana Wall

Magic and Mischief at the Wayside Hotel by Elizabeth Everett brings a fantastically unfamiliar world to the doorstep of a widowed mother. With a goofy, whimsical sense of humor, Everett puts magical creatures and fairies into an urban setting, and the chaos that ensues will keep you laughing throughout the book. The author explores themes of the power of love, the hurt in our everyday world, and where we come from.

Pax is a hotel manager for the magical entity known as Wayside Hotel #5, one of the last functioning magical hotels for intergalactic travelers. Josie is a widowed underpaid mother who has at last lost the uphill battle known as rent. They meet when Pax puts out an advertisement for a new tenant, one that he is hoping will keep the hotel open and alive, and Josie appears for a tour.

Despite her gut instincts that something is off with her new apartment, Josie decides to take up residency with her son. Pax breathes a sigh of relief, hoping that a new tenant will rejuvenate the mysterious mechanics that operate the hotel-turned-apartment building. The relief doesn’t last long as all the magical creatures now trapped on Earth have to hide their identities from Josie and her intensely curious son.

An unlikely love story may unfold if Pax and Josie, hindered by their pasts, are able to find each other. With quirky characters bringing fantasy creatures from all around the multiverse, Magic and Mischief at the Wayside Hotel is a wonderful story.

I enjoyed the resounding themes of the strength and power of love, which I feel can be found in almost every book, somehow, but Everett puts a unique twist on it. The writing is done in a whimsical, light-hearted, and humorous way that will leave readers with a warm feeling as the story wraps up.
