Stay for a Spell by Amy Coombe spins a warm, charming, and homey story built on the traditional foundation of a trapped princess who needs true love to escape her present circumstances.

Princess Tandy is tired of kissing babies, cutting ribbons, and all the tedious responsibilities that come with royalty. But she will never be tired of books–which is why, when her entourage comes across a book store, Tandy can’t say no. She steps inside the charming little bookstore without any idea that her life is about to change drastically.

Without any warning, Tandy touches a cursed object and becomes trapped in the bookstore, unable to step foot off the property. Her attendant hurries back to the castle to find a sorcerer to break the spell, while in the meantime, her parents send well-intended visitors to break it. But they are no ordinary visitors. They are the seven princes from across the kingdom, come to break Tandy’s spell with a true love’s kiss. Whether Tandy has a true love that can break the kiss remains to be seen.

In between the fanfares of having seven princes arrive on her doorstep with their lips puckered, Tandy explores the bookstore and becomes friends with one of the regulars as well as an annoyingly mysterious (and handsome) pirate with an unusual curse. Together they organize the bookstore and bring business and fresh life to it.

Coombe explores the traditional foundation that a kiss from a true love can fix anything––together with her spunky and instantly likeable heroine of the story. I loved the charming and witty writing, the small-town Tandy ended up in, and the way the story ended. I it speaks to strong women and feminists everywhere about how much power they can wield.
