When the chips are down, it’s a good thing our main character Maudy has her loyal dog Martin Short, who is also friends with a rescue cat. How adorable is that?
Yet, “adorable” is not how I’d describe the entire book, despite the cute lakeside town, the high school football rivalries, hot apple cider and Halloween festivities for all ages.

Maudy, a park ranger, has her hands full with her job, her extra-curricular activities, and running for office in the town. Not to mention conflicting connections with her current boyfriend and her former (and possibly future) male best friend, whose back yard abuts Maudy’s.
In addition to that, major complications ensue when she learns someone is trying to torpedo her campaign for Village Council, and get her fired from the job she loves. Then members of the 2000-2010 high school graduation class come to town for a long-planned gala reunion, and the past and the present collide, threatening dozens of lives.
Occasionally I found it difficult to place one of the dozen or so main actors in this book, but basically I figured it out, though I hadn’t read the first book in the Stone’s Throw Mystery Series.
I would recommend charging into this book on all cylinders. Prepare yourself with cozy hot cider, but don’t be surprised when, a few pages later, you’ve got chills running up and down your spine while hiking through the eerie, nighttime forest, or even worse, sliding through––
Can’t tell you: no spoilers. here.

One day it occurred to her that she could combine the two pursuits. She recently began to write wine-themed cozy mysteries. Hopefully, her agent will love them.
