Sybil Wyntres has everything she wants … and yet she doesn’t. Corinne Price crafts a cunning, twisted tale built on two people running away from two opposite forces––the Portcullis and the Void. With intriguing writing, devious plot twists, and quirky characters, Price has written a skin-crawling page turner that keeps you buried until the last page.
Sybil Wyntres finally has magic––after a dangerous spell gone wrong and the sacrifice of her best friend, she has become a Warden of the Portcullis. Her deepest desire becomes more complicated when she is branded with the slur of “Vollmagus” because of the uncontrollable varieties of magic contained in her. When she is sentenced to one of the easiest assignments for a Warden, she aspires to become the best Warden the city has ever seen.
At first, it seems like she’s succeeding––until her promotion ceremony begins to dredge the corruption in the Portcullis to the surface. When she uncovers secrets she’s not supposed to know, Sybil tries to find answers to soothe herself but the more she looks, the more she realizes there is more corruption going on in the Portcullis than anyone knows.
Meanwhile on the underside of things, a darkling slaves and kills under his master’s orders––never to be freed. He serves the Void Born. When his path unexpectedly crosses Sybil’s, he is forced to bring her to the Void where they make startling discoveries about the magical runes she carries.
Price clearly knows how to write a story. I am a busy person and tried to read this book in chunks, but I kept coming back to finish it. I deeply enjoyed this book which is filled with cruel twists of fate and gripping writing. But it is not for the faint hearted since our favorite characters journey deep into the heart of the Nether Peaks where horrors await.
