I read Missing, the author’s first book in the City Streets Mystery series. I didn’t think Book 2 could get better, but Beckler has crafted another shining star.
Hunted takes you into the world of the homeless, how they survive, and support one another. When one of their own turns up dead from what appears to be an overdose, their world is rocked. The catch is the victim has been clean for months, and the others of the homeless tribe know it. Victor, who has just gotten off the streets himself, and Oscar, a standard Schnauzer, decide to investigate. There is no way their friend fell off the wagon, not this time, not again. The pieces of this puzzle are not fitting together. Victor isn’t even sure if all the pieces are from the same puzzle.

KSD has taken on two rival gangsters as clients. They must keep them separate and happy. If either client knew of the other, Sophia and Kasper would be in serious danger. One of the gangsters thinks Victor knows something about the recent killing of his two sons. Revenge is the only thing on Novak’s mind. Meanwhile the other family of crooks, Robertson, is trying to do a land grab and is carelessly flushing out homeless to purchase abandoned buildings.
And this is only the beginning of the shenanigans. People are not who they claim to be and are looking to double-cross Victor. Arson, shootings, and homeless-formes-military-vigilantes all become intertwined, creating more chaos. Victor gets hospitalized and evicted from his not-so-good apartment. He borrows a van/camper to stay in while looking for a new place to live AND solving crimes. Oscar is not happy.
This mystery has three separate story lines that ingeniously all come together. The ending is surprising and satisfying with a shootout, gangsters, and Oscar as the hero. Beckler likes to keep his readers’ heads on a swivel.
Beckler has penned another set of books, the Mason & Sterling Series, as well as two anthologies and some Sci-Fi novels. Beckler is a master wordsmith and still creating. Next up: Book 3. In the meantime try out another book by Beckler: A Long Shadow, a dystopian vision of London where public safety is in private hands.
