Those of us who experienced Covid-19, along with its lasting long-term effects, have been expecting the pandemic to start coming to light in books, music, and movies. Danielle Postel-Vinay uses one of the ways the disease damaged a life and career to trigger a cascade of events that fall like dominos.
Olivia Beech is an American master sommelier who travels to Paris, France to interview for a position at a 3-star Michelin restaurant. Unfortunately, Olivia lost her sense of taste due to her bout with Covid, and it has not returned. As they say, when one sense is lost another becomes enhanced. Olivia’s nose has perfect olfactory pitch. She can still identify the most challenging wines by smell.

As the stranger in this small municipality, Olivia becomes the prime suspect. But the florist owner sees it all as she arrives to deliver flowers to the restaurant. She whisks Olivia away and introduces her to the Neighborhood Watch and all its members. It’s an interesting, yet effective, group of Parisians who make up the watch. They have solved other local crimes.
I especially enjoyed this adventure because I’ve always wanted to go to Paris. Years ago, I studied the French language in preparation for that trip which never happened. This novel has many French words and phrases I was able to decipher from memory. I always appreciate it when I learn while reading fiction. I found in France there is a police force that upholds the law, and municipal officers who patrol the neighborhoods. I learned about wine, flowers, and perfume. And the author makes the reader feel what it would be like to lose the sense of taste.
In addition to all this information and action, the author, like Hitchcock in his films, makes a cameo appearance. Keep that in mind as you devour this book. Also keep a napkin nearby as French pastries and finely cooked meals pass under your nose. It all sounds so delectable that you’ll need to wipe the drool off your face. Bon appetite!
