As thrilled as Domestic Diva advice columnist Sophie Winston is to have family members visiting for Old Town, Virginia’s annual Fourth of July celebrations, she’s also feeling like it’s becoming a version of a chaotic Vacation movie. Not only are Sophie’s beloved parents and their friends staying with her, also on site is her Aunt Melly’s new husband whom she suddenly married after only knowing him for a few months. Gus Eberle is undeniably charming, perhaps overly so, as Sophie and her bestie Nina Reid Norwood spot him doing an early morning “run of shame” as he sneaks out of the house of Dolly Peabody. So Sophie and Nina have to do their best to keep straight faces when Dolly comes to them not about Gus, but to report that she has a dead body in her home. Why she tells them this and not the police is a question that can be answered by Sophie’s long history as an amateur detective, but when Officer Wong does finally arrive, there’s no corpse to be found. Unfortunately, not too long afterwards an undeniably real murder occurs, with DNA linking the crime to Sophie’s father.

A mix of life advice, recipes, and engaging mystery, this 19th in the series continues to feature engaging characters and a very likable heroine. Sophie’s British other bestie Bernie Frei is largely absent throughout the novel, but he gets a wonderful plot entirely appropriate for the holiday setting. Recipes for patriotic desserts are presented just in time for readers planning to celebrate as well, but the advice provided by Sophie and even Natasha will prove to be helpful all year round. Lively dialogue, Sophie’s adorably supportive family, and mystery shenanigans involving secret artwork, Lotharios, and cantankerous detectives are sure to please longtime fans of this series as well as serve as a fun entry point for readers looking for a humorous, small-town, holiday-centric cozy.
