Readers are in for another delightful experience when they pick up The Vampyre Client, book four in the Irregular Detective Mystery series by Jeri Westerson.
Former Baker Street Irregular Tim Badger and his colleague, Ben Watson, are hired by Mister Jonathan Wicker to reassure his neighbors that he is not in fact a vampyre. This is not the easiest of tasks as Mister Wicker is a pale, dark-haired man who wears dark glasses and insists he is allergic to the sun. Oh, and he is a scientist who studies bats.
Tim and Ben, though, agree to travel to the village of Ashwell in Herefordshire to convince neighbors of Wicker that he is simply an ordinary scientist. But things are never as easy as they sound, and not long after their arrival, Wicker is found murdered. Tim and Ben, as well as Miss Littleton (a reporter for the Daily Chronicle) find themselves in the midst of a mystery that has even the most logical questioning what is real.
I read this during a brutal summer heat wave and loved traveling to England in October 1895. Thanks to the vivid descriptions, I could feel the crisp air and see the golden leaves, and the nature of the mystery our detectives were called to investigate gave wonderfully spookish vibes. I found myself dreaming of the season of fall as I read.
The mystery is page-turning. Readers do not have to wait long for the action to begin and the tension and clues escalate with each chapter. I had my guess as to the true culprit and could hardly wait to get to the reveal.
Readers can certainly jump into this series with this latest entry, but I encourage everyone to go back to the beginning as the characters are simply delightful. I adore Tim and Ben – they balance each other perfectly. The addition of Miss Littleton was perfectly played – I cheered when she showed up on their train out of London. Talk about pluck!
Readers who have enjoyed the Veronica Speedwell mystery series by Deanna Raybourn should rush to pick up this series. And be sure not to miss the glossary in the front of the book and the author’s note in the back – both are excellent additions to an entertaining read.
