I recently finished a Percy Jackson series, and am very interested in fantasy worlds where deities have a hand in the fates of the mortals they governed. I was absolutely delighted to be emailed with What the Gods Left Behind by Zephyr Trillian.
Beginning with an intriguing backstory about a time when the gods walked the earth, Trillian takes us to the present times where there are only a few select individuals who walk the earth with even a remnant of godblood in their veins. They are required to wear silver collars that mark them as magical beings that keep their powers in check and identify their attunement. Wisterly is one such entity––a Hearthkeeper at heart, she is treated like the lowest of servants at House Caldwell. When she is wrongly accused of a crime she didn’t commit, she runs for her life.
She is intercepted by a notorious and cunning thief from the Guild, Mordred. Although mysterious, he offers her safety and protection for reasons unknown. She accepts and begins her new life as an outcast and runaway. While running from one problem, she stumbles into a new problem as she is recruited to assist the thief in pulling off a stunning heist.
As an acolyte of one of the gods, Wisterly is a useful asset in this heist to retrieve an Artifact––one of the magical objects the gods left behind. She is able to sense the Artifact and use it to her advantage without adverse consequences … which cannot be said for the man holding it.
Once Wisterly and Mordred realize the enormous power and ramifications of coming into contact with the Artifact, they decide it cannot get into the hands of the higher powers. Seeking shelter in the hall of the Dancers, acolytes of another god, they also try to hide Wisterly. With people searching for Wisterly, and the Guild coming after Mordred, and both parties seeking the Artifact they hold, Wisterly and Mordred have to make difficult choices to save both their lives. Unsure of who they can trust, their circle grows tighter and tighter as they become the prey, and the hunters draw ever closer.
I really enjoyed reading this book which focusus equally on a strong heroine and a mysterious hero with flickering loyalties. It was a comfort book to fall back on (despite my being on a deadline) while also being an exciting read.
With reliable characters and a heavy focus on character development, Trillian leads her readers with a firm hand on a journey of loyalties, friendship, and ultimately, the truth.
