When I was first introduced to Kiki Lowenstein, it was through a collaboration between one of my favorite authors, Neil Plakcy, and this author I had never heard of, Joanna Campbell Slan. I was instantly interested in Kiki, a small town, charming, headstrong woman, and when I was approached and asked to review this book, I jumped. The cover had me first––I love crocheting and when I saw the cute amigurami rabbit, I couldn’t say no.
Luckily, Kiki is on the case. She knows she’s innocent and as she begins investigating the victim’s past, she finds that the victim had made a lot of enemies. Faced with insurmountable odds, Kiki navigates a twisting plot of social hierarchies, manipulations, and loaded phrases. She races against the police to prove her own innocence while battling problems at home and the approaching deadline for her crochet classes to turn in those gosh dang bunny rabbits to a charity.
I am so thankful that I got to review this book. Slan is an accurate and real writer, not afraid to approach sensitive topics. I loved how deep yet sunny this book was––that is the only way I can describe it. I respect the way Sloan incorporates sensitivity into her story while leading readers deeper into the plot and making them think. I will (attempt to) wait patiently for the next installment––and while we’re waiting, you should check out this book! It’s exciting while being warm and fuzzy.
