Lucy Hubbard is, to put it mildly, elated. She’s just received an invitation to join The Cloak and Dagger Club, an exclusive club for up-and-coming writers in 1930 London. Her joy at the invitation is only slightly dampened by the fact that Frank Murray, her former fiancée, is also a member. But when Horace Hazelmoor, the founder of the club, is discovered with a knife in his back the day after Lucy’s first meeting with the group, and Frank is the prime suspect, Lucy joins forces with her ex to help prove his innocence. The discovery of a mysterious list of names in Horace’s hotel room only deepens the intrigue. What is the list, and why does Horace have it?

Lucy is a delightful character, and I enjoyed spending time with her. She is very observant, astute, and extremely skilled at getting people to talk to her. This comes in handy more than once during her and Frank’s investigation. They make a good team. Add in the various members of the Cloak and Dagger Club, all of whom seem to have secrets, and a police inspector who just wants to solve the crime without considering the facts, and you have an engaging period mystery.
The narrative is enhanced by the inclusion of a small excerpt from each author’s mystery. This provides a nice break and lets the reader see for themselves each author’s writing style. The mystery was well plotted, and the identity of the killer, as well as the motive, took me completely off guard.
There is also a very satisfying epilogue which ties everything up neatly while leaving the door open for a sequel. I do hope there are more books in the series, as I would very much like to spend more time with Lucy, Frank, and their mystery writing contemporaries.
