Katie Aubrey, owner of The Char-Board, has an opportunity to serve mini charcuterie boards to an elite group of retirees at The Pinnacle. It is said to be the retirement home where CEOs go to die. Interestingly enough, the victim is not a resident, but the manager, and someone is doing their best to make it look like Char-Board coworker Javier is the killer.
The Charcuterie Shop Mystery series includes culinary, paranormal, and snarky aspects making it a completely enjoyable cozy mystery series. Although this is the 5th book, it is a stand-alone and can be enjoyed without reading the preceding books.

So, who killed the house manager? The residents are sure that it was one of their own and could it have anything to do with the cowtastrophe that occurs at the start of the story? Each resident is unique as to food preferences, and each of them could very well have a motive. Hazel wasn’t the nicest of people, but then again there also seems to be something off with the owner, Killian. The only thing Katie is absolutely sure of is that Javier didn’t do it.
One would think that it would be easy to solve this mystery. Katie has access to not one, but three ghosts this time but just as Katie is about to learn something, they swirl or pop out of the picture. This will call for some serious sleuthing and maybe even some undercover work.
It certainly produces some fun scenarios. This is the sort of cozy that keeps you chuckling and helps you forget the worries of the world. Funny almost to the point of silly, but that doesn’t mean the plot is lacking or that the mystery is easy to solve. Oh no, the red herrings were good at distracting, and I wasn’t quite sure as to how the murders were related. I will say that the Scooby gang trap that Katie and the group come up with was very entertaining.
In addition to a fun story, there is a recipe included at the conclusion. Thanks to this series I have learned that charcuterie comes in all shapes and sizes as well as flavor profiles. It isn’t just for pairing with wine, but that is okay too. I am looking forward to what J.C. Eaton comes up with in book six.
