Antiques expert and amateur sleuth Georgina Carey is back in Victoria Tait’s latest cozy mystery Treasures and Treachery in Tenerife. And once again, readers looking for arm chair travel need look no further. I read this during an extreme heat wave in the midwest and appreciated the bookish escape.
Georgina travels to Tenerife with Maltese police officer Jac Galea, following a fragment of an old treasure map. What starts out as a treasure hunt becomes a murder investigation when Georgina and friends stumble upon the body of local citizen Isabel. The town is struggling between servicing the tourists who bring in money and locals who are driven out due to lack of affordable housing. Isabel was right in the middle of this polarizing debate.

Georgina continues to be a character to admire – the definition of resilient. And I enjoyed seeing Jac again and watching the two interact as friends.
Victoria’s descriptions of the setting of Tenerife are a delight to absorb. Her words capture the vibrancy of the place. Typically I will look up a place in my reading I had never been to before reading, but I felt no need as I read this. After I finished I did an image search and felt myself nodding as I scrolled – Victoria’s writing did the beauty of the place justice. And I haven’t even mentioned the delicious descriptions of meals Georgina and Jac enjoyed throughout the story!
I was fascinated about the Agatha Christie steps mentioned and found myself once again awestruck by the amount of research Victoria must complete to tell such a captivating story.
The ending is fast paced and one I did not guess ahead of time. I also enjoyed knowing that Georgina seems to have her next adventure planned, and I plan to be right there with her!
