With a boring yet steady job as an underling at a questionable (ambulance-chaser) law firm, it’s no wonder Jamie Winters decides to liven up her life by going to a video shoot at a haunted house one night. Well, she doesn’t exactly decide. She’s co-opted by the insistent Maizy—a teen who has powers well beyond her years—as a favor for a friend of a friend on the video crew.

So how does the evening go? We don’t exactly find out the extent of what happens because during the shoot in this cobweb-infested mansion, a gigantic (in Jamie’s eyes) spider lands on her and she freaks out. It’s only later we learn that … nope, no spoiler alerts here.
So, what can I tell you? I can say there are two starring elements in this book: the fun, convoluted plot, and the inventively-named cast of characters that surround Jamie and Maizy. Oh, and there’s a love story, too. Actually several. The first involves Jamie and … oh yeah, I promised not to tell. Well, characters include computer/hacker genius Grunt, Maizy’s uncle Curt, an unwashed ghostly (but real) person, Rock the unwilling bodyguard, someone named Tuggy, Destiny, a princess-type with a spirit guide who has a lot to say. And there are more.
It’s to the author’s credit that we can follow along on this whole journey to solve a murder, after one of the people is killed, and Jamie discovers there may have been an earlier, related death. That’s all I can reveal at this time. Really. Except that it’s a fun read!
