“Dead of Winter” A Lily Dale Mystery By Wendy Corsi Staub

by Sandra Murphy

Lily Dale is home to psychics, mediums, tarot card readers, and magic. It’s easier to list those without other-worldly powers than those who possess them. Bella Jordan agrees she has “a feeling” now and again but nothing like the others claim. A recent widow, she and her son, Max, accidentally relocated to Lily Dale. Now they run a B&B in the midst of minor and not so minor repairs.

Max’s best friend is Jiffy, so named because of his love of peanut butter. Jiffy is an odd child, forgetting his coat in the worst of winter, talking to an invisible friend, and with an imagination that knows no bounds. When he announces he’s going to be kidnapped but not until it snows, it could just be a tall tale or something more.

Bella happens to see a light on the lake late one night. There’s also a scream that most people attribute to an owl. She’s not so sure. When a body is found at the lake’s edge, she’s pretty sure the owl is innocent.

To say much more would give away too much of the plot. The mystery is a good one with red herrings that are all too believable and clues that are subtle. Bella is able to find out more about herself as she’s involved in finding Jiffy, discovering who the murdered man was, who could have killed him, and how she’s going to live her life as a widow—provided the killer doesn’t find her first.

This is the third book in the enjoyable series. Bella’s B&B is someplace you’d like to visit, complete with appointments to hear your future with the psychics. The quirky town is a welcoming place, even in the dead of winter.
