Skye Denison-Boyd is on maternity leave from her job as school psychologist. That doesn’t mean she won’t get called in to consult now and again. With newborn twins, it’s either find a sitter (aka Skye’s mom or Wally’s dad) to sit for the kids or take them along, a time-consuming process of in and out of car seats and strollers. The principal can’t be trusted to follow the rules, especially where spending any money is concerned, and it’s a chance to get out of the huge RV they’re living in while their new house is being built.

The town is still reeling from recent tornado damage, and the scammers are out in full force. The first insurance claims adjuster signed off on repairs but was soon recalled to other duties. The new adjuster is not so easy to work with; she turns down all claims in her quest to be named vice-president of the company.

When an explosion rocks the town, the bowling alley is damaged and a dead body is found inside. The bowling alley belongs to Bunny, mother of Skye’s ex-boyfriend. Bunny is a piece of work, always on the hunt for a man, dresses inappropriately, and skates on the edge of legal sometimes. The dead body isn’t the only secret revealed by the explosion.

The Fire Marshall determines it wasn’t a gas leak but a deliberate act that blew up the building. There are a few suspects—an ex-boyfriend of Bunny’s, a man who wants the gambling machine permit Bunny holds, an angry wife who thought Bunny encroached on her man, the mysterious stranger in town, or none of the above. Skye is determined to figure out the puzzle, if for no other reason than she needs a distraction from dirty diapers. As official consultant for the police department, she’s in the position to ask a few questions.

Skye and Wally make a great couple. They’re going to have their hands full as the twins grow. Of course, they’ve already dealt with Wally’s uber-rich dad who likes to do things for them and Skye’s micro-managing mother who wants in on every decision. At least the babies distract the grandparents now although the kids may end up owning every toy made.

The mystery is a good one with twists and turns that will keep readers guessing. Side plots of school problems and scammers keep the story moving. This is the second book in the Welcome Back to Scumble River series. There are nineteen previous Scumble River books from another publisher. All those titles start with Murder of a….
