From Spy to Scout Leader
They say “time heals all wounds,” and in Merry’s case that might be true. She has moved on from an abrupt end to her previous government job and is enjoying her new life as a scout leader, along with BFF Kelly Albers, to a troop of precocious, yet delightful, Girl Scouts. Merry Wrath’s time as a CIA spy was essentially sabotaged when her identity was revealed, a Valerie Plame-style scandal, causing her to retreat incognito to her hometown, oddly and aptly named Who's There, Iowa. However, her intent to keep a low profile didn't always work with some former nemeses popping up bent on exacting revenge or being in the wrong place at the wrong time to discover a dead body. But, worry? Not much. She has well-developed survival skills, a stash of high-tech WMDs, “weapons of minuscule destruction,” and a troop of pre-teens to challenge any would-be criminal, assassin, or just your everyday murderer.

Meerkats and Murder earns 5/5 Armed Cat Collars...Engaging with a Few Giggles!

It’s just another gathering of the troop as Merry and Kelly enjoy the young girls’ creative writing efforts. Although the project was to write about contemporary social media and bullying issues girls their age face, it seems they’re more interested in writing about spies, terrorists, and murder. However, after the girls leave, art imitates life when Merry is surprised by a masked man and a gun sticking into her spine. The intruder escapes her cat’s attack, and later she finds a note under her bed with her address and the initials “JH.” Ok, it’s time to once again bring her spy skills out of retirement: informal questions, checking with her former handler, a bit of hacking, and “CLASSIFIED”? The identity of “JH” leads to surprises, secrets, and a dead body! But, circumstances provide Merry an interesting sidekick...a nine-year-old dynamo!

You go, girl...girls! I love Merry, and little Betty is delightful. Leslie Langtry's writing style is very entertaining with some snarky insights and humorous comments that always make me excited for every new Merry Wrath book. This very clever mystery has so much to unpack as once again Merry’s past is giving her trouble with old nemeses, Russian spies, and missing documents, but with the girls having trouble at school, she also has non-spy issues to deal with. I greatly enjoyed the first-person narrative (my favorite perspective) sharing Merry's inner thoughts incorporating many of her experiences, often dangers, as a spy, but it’s the snarky comments and descriptions that always provide the giggles. Totally entertaining. Beyond clever. Just the right amount of humor. Don’t forget the sister-in-law taxidermists and a plethora of “fur” friends to round out this now “Top Ten” favorite series.

I do love bonuses with my cozies, so what could I suggest for this Merry Wrath Mystery series? Maybe some CIA tricks like best moves to disarm an assassin, how to store your uzi, safety tips for storing plutonium in your basement? Or a recipe for “Spy—cy Stew” or ways to use Russian vodka. Just saying...
