Do You Believe in Curses?
It’s hard not to believe in “curses” when you learn of the tragedies that have befallen Calliope Rose Collins and her family since a scorned woman, purported to be a witch, cursed Calliope’s great-great grandmother for seducing her beau. She promised that “any Hollister daughter born to the [union], or any daughter born to their descendants, would suffer the tragic and early loss of their beloved.” Since then the female line has met more than a few untimely accidents, including her own mother who died in an auto accident with her father when Calliope was only four years old. She herself had survived the crash, cocooned in a car seat, and orphaned and deeply distraught, her Aunt Gracie took her in sharing with her the magical possibilities within the old attic and a love for music. Her passion for music grew giving her a life-long purpose and alleviating much of the pain grief had caused, but the “curse,” in the form of another senseless accident, sent her life into a tail spin. Her “beloved” life as a concert pianist is lost, and although physical therapy has brought back much of her range of movement in her left arm, the severity of her injury has left her without the dexterity needed to return to her professional career. So retreating back to her childhood home and the solace of the dusty attic with her cat Alastair by her side, she hopes to find a purpose to allow her to move on...without music.

The Curse of Hollister House earns 5/5 Notes of Murder...Engaging Fun!
Calliope, adjusting to her new disability, has returned to the comforting surroundings of her childhood home and the arms of her Aunt Gracie. Confronting memories of her childhood and feelings of despair, her thoughts swirl about what life may have in store for her now. But it’s sirens and lights of emergency vehicles in the distance that capture her attention. Tom Walden, the caretaker on the property, had lived here since well before Callie arrived after the family tragedy. He heard on his police scanner that the body of a young girl had been found near the campground down by the lake with details that sounded eerily familiar: “Like with Stella.” Like Stella Steinmetz. Calliope’s junior high best friend went missing on her way home from school, and sadly, a few weeks later, her terribly damaged body was found in a shallow grave. Thoughts of a bear attack caused the mystery to go unsolved. Calliope always felt responsible for several “What ifs?,” and now with this new death, it’s all bubbling to the surface. However, Calliope accidentally finds an old newspaper report of another suspicious death eerily similar. “No way this is a coincidence.”

Wow, another excellent series! The mind of Kathi Daley is so creative, it blows mine! Her writing style is always entertaining, descriptive, delving into more than the murder mystery with family, friendships, and a protagonist dealing with her own personal tragedies, but she incorporates unique and fascinating crimes, cold cases are my favorite, and several suspects with motives to ponder. And in the end, the revelation was...intense! This first-in-the-series seems a bit longer allowing for more engaging, in-depth exploration of Calliope, her friendship with Stella, the other characters, their connections, and events happening during the fall season. My own memories were sparked learning Calliope and her friend had acted like young Nancy Drews, since I did, too, writing about my fictional investigation for my sixth-grade friends. Calliope is reunited with a childhood friend, Cass Wylander, who is is now the investigating officer, and with this close connection to law enforcement, she stays in the loop, but not out of trouble. This is gonna be a favorite Top Ten series!

Alert! The Mystery Before Christmas, book 2 in this new A Cat in the Attic Mystery series, is set to release November 12, 2019. Preorder HERE. Callie is writing human interest stories for a regional newspaper, and while reporting on a local Santa committing random acts of kindness, she gets involved in another random act of...murder.
