Make Mine a Double Scoop of...Murder!
It’s been less than a year since Cambria Clyne accepted a job as property manager of a 40-unit LA apartment complex and another 32-unit complex in Burbank. It has afforded her a home for her and her preschool-aged daughter Lilly, who loves dressing up as superheroes. Both complexes have a plethora of eccentric full-time residents with whom she is close, friendly, or tolerates often entangling her in apartment issues, resident conflicts, and a few pesky murders. There’s her BFF/struggling actress Amy, disinherited son of the owners Kevin, detective/boyfriend Chase, and Lilly’s baby daddy Tom to support her efforts, but to decompress...it’s ice cream!

“We all make mistakes.” Small. Bigger. Catastrophic. Cambria is not telegraphing her desire for advancement, but she is interviewing for the managerial position for a large complex that could be described as the Four Seasons of apartment buildings and thinking of leaving her peeps in her current lower-middle class comfortability...but it’s next door making this an awkward decision. The increase in salary, benefits package, monthly bonuses, and the living quarters are hard to ignore, but there is the “incident.” Cambria knows all too well the last manager was murdered. Buzzz! Buzzz! The frantic text messaging from a resident wanting his internet improved interrupts her interview. He doesn’t know what to do with the industrial drum found in the attic by the cable guy. Leave it alone! Too late. He pried open the lid and discovered...a long dead body! “Why-oh-why-oh-whhhyyy does this keep happening?”

No “Mistake” About It! Erin Huss has again penned a very entertaining murder mystery following a traditional formula I really enjoy. With the mystery occurring early in the drama she adds her engaging writing style with an engaging humor, quirky and endearing characters, realistic predicaments (Ok, I know not very one finds a dead body.), and a surprising “Oh, Wow!” ending! The mystery kept me turning the page putting Cambria in another predicament as she tries to uncover the identity of the body and much more. If done quickly and quietly, it may keep friends out of jail and not ruin her chances for the new job. I do like a little romance with my cozy, so there’s Chase that fits the bill along with partnering in gathering clue, and a bit of a triangle emerges since Tom seems to have gained some interest in rekindling a connection beyond just every other weekend with Little Lilly. I really enjoy the little snippets introducing each chapter, and the “Note to Self” reminders add clever, unique insight in Cambria’s perspective. I loved it!
