When architect Archer Landis finds his Julia, his love, dead, it forces him down a path of deception, it spins his world out of control. Authorities assume that Julia’s murder is caused by terrorists as they discover she has ties to the Arab-American community.

With a background as Vietnam vet, husband, father, and successful architect, Landis is a complicated character. When those around start suffering from mysterious attacks, Landis takes it upon himself to search for Julia’s murder. This search leads him to discover hidden talents that he never suspected he had and grow in the process.

According to an author interview, Archer is the quintessential ordinary man thrust into extraordinary circumstances. She used this as a way to illustrate that there are “risks in making assumptions about people.” And, she also used it to highlight that for Archer the stakes are high. Even as he searches for answers, he cannot stop his career. Life must go on.

This is a debut mystery from Victoria Weisfeld, who has previously written short stories that have been published in several mystery magazines.

With its fast pace, Architect of Courage reads more thriller with a dash of mystery. Landis and the people who surround him are believable as is the dialogue. It is not easy to write from the opposite sex’s perspective, and Weisfeld does it very well.

The story is fast-paced and nuanced, moving seamlessly between locations including New York and the south of Spain. Its international flavor is unique.

With its reference to a post-9/11 world, terrorism takes center stage particularly as the author includes details on how to construct an office building to be terrorist free. While some of the plot points seemed a little too convenient, the story worked overall.

Architect of Courage takes you on a ride with plenty of twists and red herrings along the way but everything is wrapped up neatly in the end. I hope Architect of Courage is not Wesfield’s last novel.
